No fewer than thirteen people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
